TRACKING ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN SOUTH AFRICA: A GEM PERSPECTIVE
Mike Herrington, Jacqui Kew, Penny Kew Published: 2009
The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) research programme was initiated to explore and assess the role of entrepreneurship in national economic growth. South Africa joined the GEM project in 2001, and has participated in all subsequent studies.

Entrepreneurial activity is considered to be an important mechanism for economic development through job creation, innovation and its welfare effect, which has led to a growing policy interest in entrepreneurship at a national level. Tracking Entrepreneurship in South Africa: a GEM Perspective hopes to take the reader on a journey through the key insights and findings of GEM teams from 2001 to 2009. It is hoped that this book will continue to stimulate debate about the importance of entrepreneurship in South Africa, as well as to focus policy-makers’ attention on key areas that require attention if entrepreneurship is to be allowed to flourish in South Africa.

AFRICAN IMMIGRANTS IN SOUTH AFRICA: JOB TAKERS OR JOB CREATORS?
Vivence Kalitanyi (Department of Retail Business Management, Cape Peninsula University of Technology) and
Kobus Visser (School of Business and Finance, University of the Western Cape) Accepted September 2010

Over the last decade, African immigrants have been met with and exposed to severe manifestations of hostility to their presence in South Africa. A significant number of these migrants have successfully applied their entrepreneurial flair in establishing small enterprises and employing workers, often to the envy of their local counterparts.

This paper presents the findings of an empirical study conducted in 2007 on job creation for South Africans by African immigrant entrepreneurs, including face-to-face interviews with 120 African immigrant entrepreneurs. These findings were triangulated with 7 non-governmental organisations that interact with immigrants in Cape Town. A review of the literature on migration, entrepreneurship and immigrant entrepreneurs formed the basis for the study. The findings indicate that more than 80 per cent of African immigrant entrepreneurs interviewed employ South Africans in their businesses.

CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT FOR INNOVATION

Successful innovation doesn't just happen overnight in organizations - it needs to be nurtured. The healthier the environment, the greater the results, according to Bob Rosenfeld, innovator-in-residence at the Center for Creative Leadership. He has some sound advice for organizations that want to be innovation leaders.

Remember, avoid the temptation to separate your "innovation" efforts from your everyday work. Instead, recognize that innovation is part of the real world, and strive to create a fostering, sustainable environment where it can prosper. In the end, innovation will either thrive or be threatened in any given working environment. Listen to these three principles to figure out what direction innovation is headed in your organization:

A range of policies have been developed that demonstrate the commitment of the South African government to overcome these challenges, namely the Industrial Policy Action Plan, the New Growth Path and the Performance Evaluation Framework.

One thing that most working South Africans look forward to is a holiday. Preferred holiday destinations for most are outside of the country. It is highly likely that when travelling abroad you will require foreign currency.

Foreign currency is often purchased at banks at predetermined exchange rates - making one a price taker. The same is true for businesses - they cannot control exchange-rate fluctuations.
